National Grid to extend demand flexibility request to businesses

Was yours one of the households involved in last winter’s demand flexibility (i.e. reduction) scheme?

1.6 million households and SMEs took part in the scheme, voluntarily reducing electricity demand for one to two hours, usually early evening, with a discount on their electricity bill as a reward.

Now, this scheme is being rolled out to larger businesses this coming winter.

Could this be relevant to your business?

There are numerous technology solutions that can allow businesses output to continue unaffected, whilst reducing electricity demand for these periods.

The storage of heat, either as hot water or using Phase Change Materials for when heat is generated by electricity, battery storage obviously, but also cold thermal storage are all potential solutions. We’ve examined this before, but the ability to store cold thermal energy, reducing the load on refrigeration plant, enables businesses in the cold chain, and other operations which use cold, to participate in these demand management initiatives.

We can help you assess all opportunities for demand side management, so please get in touch if you’d like to realise the benefits of this scheme.
