It’s all Hot Air

Recognise this?

Overhead gas fired space heaters are fairly ubiquitous in high roofed workshops, warehouses and industrial units. Cheap to install, flexible positioning and until recently and cheap to run, they do an adequate job of heating up a large volume of air.

It’s worth stopping to think about what needs heating, and to what temperature. Does your stock, parts or machinery need to be heated to the same temperature as your people? Are you heating empty spaces? Do you require the same ambient temperature throughout? Because that’s what these appliances do.

Given the rising cost of gas, there is a move towards more localised heating as a cost and carbon saving measure – directing heat at what needs to be heated, usually people, especially if they are generally static at workstations. There is an increasing choice of appliance designed for this approach, and they bring other opportunities for saving energy through, for example, proximity controls and for optimising the value of on-site renewable energy generation.
